Issue
In 1952 all previously
issued notes were withdrawn and demonetized. Notes in "new" Dong
value, issued dated 1951 and later, were printed in Czechslovakia and remained
in circulation until 1958. Thus they were the last wartime notes issued during
the fighting against the French, and they became the official currency of the
post-1954 independent Democrative Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam)

After the Geneva accords
of 1954, which partitioned Vietnam at the 17th parallel, the DRVN (henceforth
known unofficially as "North Vietnam") was physically identified with
the former French colonial territories of Tonkin and northern Annam.

II for use by American military and certain civilian personel in 21 various
ocuupied areas of military bases.

South
Vietnam
South Vietnam (the
Former Republic of Vietnam), located in Southeast Asia, bouned by North Vietnam
in the north, Laos and Cambodia on the west, and the South China Sea on the east
and south, had an area of 66,280 sq. (171,665 sq.km) and a population of 20
million. Capital: Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh city). The economy of the area is
predominantly agricultural.

They were printed in
China for use in territories under control of the National Liberation Front.
They were never issued, but many were captured during a joint US/South Vietnam
military operation into Cambodia, relatively few survived in uncirculated
condition.

Issued in 1978, these
notes unified the monetary systems of the South with that of the Democrative
Republic of Vietnam (DRVN). Exchanged at par with the old DRVN notes, these
replaced South Vietnam (Ngan hang Viet Nam) transitional series.
